Joy Division's short career has grown in influence over the years, to the point where they've become one of the most important bands to emerge from Manchester, and indeed the UK post-punk scene. These tracks, culled from two sessions with John Peel and the TV show Something Else, find Joy Division in a live setting and give some insight into what a raw band they really were. Stripped of studio smoothness, these performances possess a distinct aggression that was largely controlled on their albums. Bernard Sumner's guitar on 'She's Lost Control' is positively ferocious, giving the song a feral edge that isn't present on the studio version. 'Transmission' is equally frantic, although propelled by that familiar bass line, the drums are far busier and the guitars create a squall of noise for a incandescent sounding Curtis to vent over. The real gems on this collection are 'Exercise One' and 'Sound Of Music', both of which never made it on to any of Joy Division's studio albums.
