In the years following The Beatles’ break-up, George Harrison carved out a singular and deeply personal solo career, guided by spiritual inquiry, melodic craft and an openness to global influences. From All Things Must Pass (1970) onwards, his music reflected a widening perspective that reached beyond Western rock conventions. Central to this outlook was his lifelong friendship and creative partnership with Ravi Shankar, through whom Harrison championed Indian classical music on the world stage, not as a novelty, but as a vital and living art form woven naturally into his own work.
The release of Dark Horse in late 1974 marked a bold and restless phase in Harrison’s journey, quickly followed by an ambitious North American tour with Shankar and an expanded ensemble. Often referred to as the Dark Horse Tour, it was the first full-scale tour of the continent by any former Beatle. Whilst it was a critical success, the heavy reliance on guest performers such as Billy Preston and Tom Scott, along with an extended section led by Ravi Shankar and his orchestra, challenged audience expectations and was not universally well received at the time.
