An official release by Grateful Dead Records, the double CD "Fillmore Auditorium, San Francisco, CA, July 3, 1966" is a document of historical as well as musical value, since it contains the recording of one of the Grateful Dead's earliest concerts, previously available only on the out-of-print 2015 box set "30 Trips Around the Sun" (two tracks, "Don't Mess Up a Good Thing" by R&B bandleader and multi-instrumentalist Oliver Sain and "Gangster of Love" by Johnny "Guitar" Watson, appeared on the 2005 album "Rare Cuts and Oddities 1966"). The rest of the show features Jerry Garcia (guitar and vocals), Bob Weir (guitar and vocals), Ron "Pigpen" McKernan (keyboards, harmonica and vocals), Phil Lesh (bass) and Bill Kreutzmann (drums) performing a handful of the group's original compositions ("Cardboard Cowboy", "You Don't Have To Ask" and the much better known "Cream Puff War") and above all with covers of blues, R&B, soul and folk standards that have often entered the Californian band's historical repertoire such as "Nobody's Fault But Mine", "Dancing In The Street", "I Know You Rider", "He Was A Friend Of Mine", "Viola Lee Blues", "Big Boss Man", "Sitting On Top Of The World", "New, New Minglewood Blues", "Cold Rain And Snow" and "Beat It On Down The Line".
