As New York new wave went, Blondie were but a few of the popular bands who permitted cover versions, certainly helping in the popularity department: now The Covers, a vinyl compilation drawn from two crackling late-70s radio broadcasts, manifests: the first source is a 1977 performance at San Francisco's Old Waldorf and the second a 1980 London show at the Hammersmith Odeon, gathering 11 total versions. Debbie Harry and company tear through garage rock staples 'Louie, Louie' and 'Hanging On The Telephone', nod to glam and art-rock on Bowie's 'Heroes' and T Rex's 'Get It On', and stretch out on a hypnotic live take of Donna Summer's 'I Feel Love'. From scrappy CBGBs upstarts toward global pop force, the songs of their forebears, original far cries, are born anew.
