Ty Segall - Emotional Mugger [LP]
Prolific garage-rock overlord Ty Segall turns things way up on his latest, his eighth studio album in as many years. “Squealer” introduces the raunchy riffs and corroded distortion that is a trademark of Emotional Mugger. Quick noise-rock explosions in “California Hills” disrupt the song’s sunbaked sway and lyrics about sleeping pills and dollar bills. You’ll find some of his most acid-fried soloing ever across the album, particularly on the title track. Occasionally all the feedback threatens to boil off the melodies, but Segall is no slouch in that department and saves some of his best tunes for last, with the noise-glam of “Candy Sam,” odd sounds of “Baby Big Man (I Want a Mommy)” and handclap-laden metalofunk of “Squealer Two.” If you loved his blistering record with the Ty Segall Band, Slaughterhouse, you’ll dig Emotional Mugger.
