After nearly getting off the ground with Get Your Wings, Aerosmith finally perfected their mix of Stonesy raunch and Zeppelin-esque riffing with their third album, Toys in the Attic.
Legends. Icons. Idols. These are the words used to describe those rare bands that have been adored for a lifetime and immortalized as distinct creators of rock and roll. But what these reverent words are missing is the notion of now. How do you reconcile a generation-spanning word like icon with the quick beat of the present? Aerosmith does it. The band members are legends, icons and idols, dynamic in the present; as cool and innovative now as they were thirty years ago. They are a phenomenon, a force of nature, trail-blazing, unstoppable, showing no signs of slowing down. Unique even among the select handful of rock bands who are still active after their Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction, Aerosmith has sold over 100 million albums. Think for a second about how big a number that is and how many people have heard their music. Huge! Steven Tyler on vocals, Joe Perry and Brad Whitford on guitars, Tom Hamilton on bass, and Joey Kramer on drums. Theyve outdone the trends and fads of rock and roll to become one of the most powerful and electrifying forces in popular music.
Toys in the Attic is their third album, released in April 1975 by Columbia Records. The album's first single release, "Sweet Emotion", was released a month later on May 19 and "Walk This Way" was later released on August 28 in the same year. The album is their most commercially successful studio LP in the United States, with eight million copies sold, according to the Recording Industry Association of America. The album's title track is part of The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll list.
"After nearly getting off the ground with Get Your Wings, Aerosmith finally perfected their mix of Stonesy raunch and Zeppelin-esque riffing with their third album, Toys in the Attic. The success of the album derives from a combination of an increased sense of songwriting skills and purpose. Not only does Joe Perry turn out indelible riffs like 'Walk This Way,' 'Toys in the Attic,' and 'Sweet Emotion,' but Steven Tyler has fully embraced sleaziness as his artistic muse." - Stephen Thomas Erlewine, allmusic.com
